Letter from Leadership - Tim - December 2018

I can’t believe 2018 is coming to a close. It has been a rollercoaster ride.
The political landscape has been contentious, the issues have been complex and a path to solutions has been filled with detours. This is not what farmers want to hear. The challenges we face need quick and sustainable solutions.
Most level-headed people can see their problems and find a solution, but with the political divide in our nation and world, how do we reset the conversation toward positive outcomes?
The answer is evident in our nation’s past. Not that many years ago, we had three administrations in a row (Reagan, Bush and Clinton) that had the ability to debate the issues and tackle them with a bi-partisan approach.
They certainly had their differences, but despite this, they found a way to move forward on important topics. Whether it be at the federal, state or local levels, our issues and solutions must be discussed on both sides of the aisle. Defining a lawmaker based solely on party affiliation is unfair, and more often than not we’re missing a great opportunity to garner support. To say this can’t be accomplished for the good of agriculture is to not believe in our democracy. Let’s face it, everyone needs to eat.
I hope all of you plan to join us at Dairy Strong on Jan. 23-24 in Madison. See you there!
