Last month, I had the privilege of reporting our administration’s recent trade victory with Mexico. As we were excited to “bask in the sun of trade possibilities south of the border”, the looming cloud was Canada.
This month, I have even more good news to report. The Edge leadership, staff, lobbying team, members and allied industries were relentless in finding a resolution with Canada. We were in the best position to convey the damage created to U.S. dairy by Canada’s unfair restrictions to class 7 milk imports.
The administration was steadfast in their resolve that milk would be the deal breaker. To the surprise of many, Canada is now another milestone in the pursuit of free trade. This not only resolves class 6 and 7 but keeps everyone accountable to moving toward fair trade. The new USMCA agreement is a signal to the world that America is open for business and is willing to be a model supplier that is predicated on open and unrestricted access.
This is not over…now on to China!
In closing, I want to thank all of you who stopped by our booth and attended our policy lunch at World Dairy Expo. Your support and engagement is much appreciated because the passion and energy of our membership is the driving force behind Edge.
