Edge dairy farmers see Canada trade deal as ‘critical win’

GREEN BAY, Wis. — Edge Dairy Farmer Cooperative, representing the voice of milk across the Midwest, today applauded the announcement of the new United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).

Importantly, this agreement includes Canada as part of a trilateral trade deal and eliminates a pricing system that hurt American dairy farmers. Edge is reviewing the trade deal’s details, which were announced late Sunday night, and will continue to communicate with lawmakers and the administration as the process moves forward. The USMCA will ultimately need to be approved by Congress.

The following comments are from Brody Stapel, president of Edge who farms in Cedar Grove, Wis.:

“Keeping Canada in the trade deal is a critical win for our dairy farmers. The partnerships built over the years with Canada and Mexico through NAFTA have been a major part of growth for our businesses. We are both relieved and excited to know that we can continue to maintain both of those markets.

“The elimination of the Class 7 pricing system will level the playing field and give U.S. farmers the opportunity to compete in a free and fair environment. That’s all we have ever asked for.

“We thank the Trump administration, our trade negotiators and Canadian leaders for working through their differences. We also acknowledge our dairy-minded lawmakers as well as Edge’s members, who have made their voices heard on Capitol Hill.

“We look forward to further developing our export business through USMCA and in other markets around the world.”
