How did you get started in dairy farming?

I received an FmHA loan and borrowed some money from my in-laws to put a down payment on the farm I currently own. I am child seven of nine and my father passed away when I was ten years old. After he passed, my mother had to sell the farm and could not provide for all the children in one household. I ended up living with other friends and family throughout my youth, and this is where I developed my skills and passion for farming.

What is your favorite part about your job?  Any personal goals you have for the farm?  Every day is a new experience and can be enjoyable, but the cows and taking care of them is what I love the most. My goals are to continue modernizing so that my work gets easier.

What do you find most challenging about being in the dairy industry? Most rewarding?  Volatile markets can be a challenge in our industry. During my first years farming, milk might have fluctuated 10 to 15 cents. Today, it might fluctuate $5 in three months. As for the most rewarding, that has to be the family aspect of it. Not only my immediate family but extended family that find the time to come out to the farm and help when needed.

What is your advice to young people interested in farming?  Don’t listen to the critics. Follow your passions and your gut feelings. Find someone who is willing to work with you on a farm transition plan.

Why do you like being on the Board of Directors for DBMMC?  I like surrounding myself with good people and progressive dairy farmers. DBMMC was started to not only provide more value to farmers selling their milk to private plants but also to represent our Midwest dairy community.

Where would you like to see DBMMC in future years?  I would like to see the cooperative continue to grow not only in membership but also on a national level with policy and legislative issues. I want the cooperative to be known as a national leader with a respected voice.
